SUBJECT: Tuesday Night Brewster Dancing

FROM: Dee G. – WebWench – www.mutinyonthedancefloor.com

We have been dancing in Brewster, NY now for 3 weeks at the Putnam Valley Italian American Social Club.  Alan Kohn has been our DJ and Christopher Petre has been our instructor, both of them doing an AWESOME job!  The first week Christopher taught us one of his newest dances – I’M GONE which goes to the song “Echo” by Gorilla Zoe.  The lesson went quite well with our first night of dancing being a success.  The second week, Christopher taught a great “older” dance by Peter Metelnick called DREAMS OF MARTINA, again the lesson was well received, and we had even more dancers attend our second week!  This past Tuesday we again upped the number of dancer’s in attendance!  Christopher taught a dance we saw at the JG Line Dance Marathon in NC, the dance is by Ruben Luna called JUST THE TWO OF US, it goes to the song of the same name by Grover Washington, Jr.  The floor was packed, and everyone was up dancing and having a great time!  All in all, our first 3 weeks in Brewster have been a blast and we hope to keep the energy going!  We have had dancers coming from as far away as Kingston and Poughkeepsie, NY and as close as Danbury and Ridgefield, CT.  All requests have been played and all dances, both old and new are being danced.  The dance floor is large, the bar is open, the dancing is fun, and the people are friendly – what more could you ask for?!  So……looking for something to do on a Tuesday night?  Why not come out and join us in Brewster, NY!  Go to Christopher Petre’s website at http://www.mutinyonthedancefloor.com/home.htm for all the details.  Hope to see you there!

Comment by LYNDY (after grand opening at DUBLIN PUB, NEW HYDE PARK)

“So, how did the first night go?  Over 53 people with barely 2 weeks of advertising I think was pretty darn good!  At the most crowded, I saw 40 people on the dance floor with more room to spare. Alan did a great job keeping the dancers up and there’s plenty of room inside the club to move around.  In addition, management was happy with the turnout.
So, here it is…….this place is ours to make or break!
Prior to this past Wednesday, the Dublin Pub was closed on Wednesday nights.  No one can say to us that “we don’t mix with the regular crowd” or “we did better with the prior format.”  We just have to make it worthwhile for them to open their doors.  Ladies and Gentlemen, it doesn’t get any easier than this.
Although I taught the last Wednesday and this one coming, I know the plan is to have different guest instructors.  I intend to be there on Wednesdays whether I am teaching or not.  Why?…selfish reasons really…..because I wanna go dancing on Wednesday nights!

On another note, I want to thank those of you that came last Wednesday just to show a first night of support for the club and those who gave me support for my first dance lesson in Nassau County in “Many Moons.”  It was great to see some familiar faces I haven’t seen in a long time.

Please feel free to forward this to anyone you like and spread the word.  Thanks for the help, Lyndy

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL EVENT

By DJ ALAN KOHN

For a long time now, I have been meaning to discuss a topic that I am sure is on every one’s mind.
I have been involved in the Country Music and dancing scene since 1991. Since than, I have seen hundred of venues open and close their doors on the country community or out of business. There is currently no Country Radio station in the greater New York area This is a shame.

Only a few dance clubs exist in the Tri State area (Colorado Cafe, Cadillac Ranch, Illusions, and Montana West . If you haven’t noticed the price of gas and electricity and food has skyrocketed. Just when you think things are turning, Hurricane Ike pummels Texas and gas prices go up. Landlords are raising rents; there is no relief in sight.
There are many other locals venues that hold dance classes, or dance events, some weekly and some monthly. All of the above make it very hard on event directors running these events to stay in business.

The points that I am trying to make are as follows:

Only you, the dancer or country music listener can make a difference.
There are now a few groups of dancers in our community. This has come about in the last couple of years. The Beginner, the Intermediate Dancer that dances to country music as well as to non country music, the Progressive dancer, the Country Only Dancer and Pattern Partner/Swing Dancer.

The question is: Can we all get along and survive and maybe bring back the glorious days of dances as in the 90’ies? The answer is YES. As John Lennon once said: “Give Peace a Chance”.
Here are some suggestions that might not make the world a better place, but would definitely contribute to all events everywhere at all times.

Event Organizers: Try not to book events on the same day.

  • Start supporting venues. If you support somebody else’s event, maybe, just maybe, they will support yours.
  • Go to local events, these event directors/organizers are there for you week in and week out.
  • When at an event, don’t hog or demand requests. Everybody who pays at the door deserves to dance.
  • Always be considerate of beginners, they are the lifeblood to our community. You were also a beginner at one time.

Buy an extra water or soda, don’t go to the bathroom and fill your Poland Springs water bottle up. Not smart. Not nice.

Just a friendly thought:

Go to the movies and it costs you $10.00 and more, add popcorn and soda and it is already $20.00. You get to see a movie that lasts 90 to 120 minutes, whether you like it or not.
On the other hand; You go to a dancing event, spend about the same amount of money, and here’s what you get:
You meet new and old friends, you network, you laugh, you have fun and chill out whether you dance or not. You exercise; you socialize, and leave your frustrations from work on the dance floor.

Stop badmouthing other instructors and events.

Our rainy week ended with a 6 hour graduation party in a firehouse for 100 guests in NJ . See here pictures. Music varied from Hip Hop to Rap, to Classic Rock ending with the beautiful song of Southside Johnny“We’re having a Party”. We were exhausted, damp and rockin’. And yes, it rained again……
See also here picture of our own contribution to American Idol.   They’re taking their show on the road. You’ve seen them here first.
Rain more rain and more!  Is it summer yet?
We did not get the chance to dance with our Aussie friends after all due to a torrential rain last Thursday and also to all kinds of mishaps, van and limo breaking down, taxis not coming, parkways flooded,  wet, angry and cranky  dancers, and other misfortunes.  We lost track of our Aussie dancers between Mount Ararat (Noah’s Ark’s landing place in my beatiful homeland Turkey) and Knights of Columbus Blauvelt. They did promise though to be back next year, hopefully, on drier circumstances. See you all sooner Chris!
UPCOMING !
We’re very excited to announce these upcoming new events all over the TriState area with various venues as well as different instructors.  We have updated our calendar with all our events all the way till August 22. Check it out! We will sign off this week with our dance at Knights of Columbus New Hyde Park Long Island Sunday 5pm – 9pm. Don’t miss out and dance with us Sunday June 28 on Long Island.
We have hightlighted a few of our events coming up. For more information please go to our left column and surf in our Site Map.
